Wondering about choosing a residential assisted living instead of a commercial assisted living facility for you or your family member? This is a very valid question and the answer can greatly impact ones quality of life.
Here are two key items you need to be aware of when making this decision.
- Similar license, same process: All licensed assisted living facilities hold the same license by the state of Texas. DADS – the Department of Aging and Disability Services – requires all facilities to go through the same process to become licensed. The difference in the license is the number of beds allowed. A residential assisted living is licensed for 14 beds or less. On the other hand, a commercial facility may be licensed for 50-100 beds.
- Different environment: Because commercial facilities are larger, the residents who live there will have a wide range of abilities depending on their health conditions. Some commercial assisted living facilities will divide residents with dementia in their own area of the facility in order to provide specialized services. A residential assisted living will have a smaller number of residents. As a result, a formal segregation of residents may be necessary.
Key questions to ask when making a decision regarding your new home:
- What is the staff to resident ratio?
- What experience does the staff have with my loved one’s condition?
- How many other residents have the same condition as my loved one?
- Can I access referrals from any residents or families that have relatives that live here?
- A Daughter’s Care offers dignified and companionate care. Both of our homes are spacious, and located on quiet tree-lined streets. Our homes are secure and handicap accessible. Well trained and experienced caregivers provide compassionate, individualized personal care. We are fully licensed by the state of Texas and would be honored to care for you or your loved one.
